Finally, Levelma Simmons, the teacher tasked with introducing Harper Lee to the black community, found someone with a direct connection to the Reverend’s alleged crimes who was willing to speak with her: a pulpwood worker named Aaron Burton, who claimed to have been called by the Reverend to help him commit murder.

She arranged the meeting between him and Lee, who arrived early at her home. It was not an easy meeting to arrange. Nobody wanted to talk about the Reverend. But there Burton was, still in his work clothes, sitting in a chair in the schoolteacher’s den, facing the author—whose name and accomplishments he did not know.

He asked the first question.

“How much you gonna pay me?”

“I don’t pay people for information,” Simmons says Lee told Burton.

So he left, and Harper Lee watched a window that opened onto the Reverend slam shut. Maybe the pulpwooder experienced some remorse; maybe the author’s warm manner and friendliness got to him. A few days later, he stopped Simmons on the road and said, “I’ll talk to that lady.”

And now he was telling that lady about the mysterious death of James Hicks. “That’s the case Harper found so … interesting,” Tom Radney would later say. Because nobody had been able to determine how he died.

Although some believed they knew exactly what had killed James Hicks: voodoo.
